For the reclamation of One Pacific Square and the greater revitalization of Old Town Chinatown, Amy, Eugene and Tristan found common interests in addressing design through the lens of Portland’s houseless crisis. As Amy delved further into alleviating the houseless and making an inclusive neighborhood, Eugene focused on bringing the previously existing Asian culture back to Chinatown through food, and Tristan found interest in preserving the existing building structure and energy conservation.
We know that neighborhoods thrive if people work and live in them. Therefore, we are proposing the renovation of One Pacific Square as the New Gate to Chinatown.
The proposal is to include the following:
• Expand NW Davis Festival Street and connecting it to the Neighborhood Community Center.
• Provide restaurant, kiosks, and food truck infrastructure to encourage all type of income level restaurant owners to return to Chinatown.
• Provide housing for mix incomes.
• Provide affordable rent retail spaces.
• Provide a much-needed grocery store.
• Bring back a Language School.
• Provide space for an Asian Cultural Center kiddy corner to the Lan Su Chinese Garden.
• Provide space for a Free Market that will provide donated household and personal items to those in need.
Because the old One Pacific Square building provided lease space for the large natural gas corporation, NW Natural, we felt it was important to re-shape the impact and perception of the building. A double-facade strategy came into play. By incorporating a controlled hybrid power double-facade system, we can provide a refreshing building skin that generates appeal from blocks away while addressing thermal and visual comfort for the users within the building. For pragmatic and sustainable adaptive reuse, our double-skin facade strategy attaches directly to the existing cast iron structure. The wooden slats used in the exterior assembly come from the Western Juniper, a tree that uses a tremendous amount of water in its lifetime. By utilizing Western Juniper at the skin, we are potentially saving 876,000 gallons of water per year, for every year that this building stands.
